Environmental Report

The company realizes, that its operations do affect the environment. In order to minimise the impacts on the environment, we have established an Environmental Policy so as to manufacture, deliver products and services in a manner that is not detrimental to the environment.

Environmental Achievements 2009

CPCS has reduced the environmental impact of its processes and facilities on an ongoing basis. This section provides the highlights of actions in 2009.

1. Reduction in the use of diesel by fleet

A vehicle fuel saving device was installed in small cars/vans achieving 16% fuel consumption savings.

2. HKAEE Campaign

CPCS joined the HKAEE Manufacturing Sectoral Award Scheme in 2009 to demonstrate its commitment in protecting the environment by implementing energy efficient solutions and reducing and recycling waste.

3. Clean Air Charter

CPCS was awarded the Clean Air Charter Certificate issued by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong Business Coalition on the Environment in 2009.

4. Managing End Cuts and Reducing Food Waste

CPCS has implemented food portioning control process to reduce food waste. After hygiene and logistic studies, end cuts and meat trims are donated to a local pig farm for further process into pig feed. This has reduced a significant amount of waste sent
to landfills.

5. Environmental Awareness Week

CPCS’s environmental awareness week was held in August 2009. The theme was to promote a better environment by Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. To raise this awareness, books, CDs and DVDs were donated from staff for others to exchange or purchase. The money collected from the sale was donated to UNICEF.

Environmental Plan for 2010
1. Air quality

CPCS will continue to commit to Clear Air Charter actions such as:

* Purchase high-loaders equipped with Euro 4 or higher emission control standard

* Conduct cleaning to the entire air ventilation system in the company on a regular basis and assess the air quality of office according to the IAQ requirements on a yearly basis.

2. Blast Chiller Replacement

Air cool condensers of blast chiller will be replaced by more energy efficient water cool condensers. This saves an estimate of 670,000 kWh electricity per year.

3. Review Boiler Hyroflow Device

Water contains mineral salts, which accumulate on inner surface of boilers and become mineral scales. It reduces heat transfer efficiency and increases diesel consumption. Two Hydroflow devices have been installed and save 53,000 litres diesel quarterly.

4. The use of Biodiesel in Vehicles

Another effective way to reduce carbon emission is to change vehicle fuel consumption to bio-diesel. CPCS will consider bio-fuel for all company vehicles once this becomes available at the airport.

5. Light Reflector for Cold Rooms

Install light reflectors, which double the light power (lux) of fluorescence light tubes allowing the number of light tubes to be cut by 360 and 190,000 kWh electricity is reduced annually.

6. Replacement of lightings

New LED lighting will be installed in Lobby, Inbound and Outbound areas and a saving of 4,800 kWh of electricity annually.

7. Extend Food Waste Collection in the Airport Area

CPCS shares good practices with other companies in the airport area. We shall encourage catering facilities to adopt our food waste collection system.

8. Glass Bottles Collection

CPCS shall explore the possibility of having glass bottles collected for reuse and recycling.

9. Environmental Label of HK Awards

To enhance environmental practices, CPCS joined Environmental Label of Wastewi$e Scheme with the aim to enhance environmental practices and set targets to reduce and reuse office materials, printed matters and items such as paper cups.

Health and Safety
Safety Initiatives in 2009

1. Target Setting

The targets of industrial accident and incident are set in the beginning of each year. The actual number of industrial accidents and incidents are reported in the monthly performance meeting with detail explanation and follow up actions to senior management. The performance of industrial accidents in 2009 was improved against 2008 with reduction of 33.3%.

2. Monitoring and Compliance

We are fully compliant with the related Occupational Health and Safety regulations in Hong Kong. Annual audit is conducted by a registered external safety auditor in accordance with the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Safety Management) Regulations and the audit report is sent to the Labour Department. In addition, internal safety audits are carried out monthly by the Safety Team and representatives of department concerned. We are also audited regularly by customer airlines as well as the Hong Kong Airport Authority on our industrial safety performance. The results in 2009 were all satisfactory. Our team of safety ambassadors coming from different department helps to increase safety awareness.

When awarding service contracts to sub-contractors, we take into account the candidate’s ability to comply with our safety requirements. The Safety Team has regular meeting with the major sub-contractors to ensure their compliance.

3. Education and Training

All new joiners attend a safety orientation course on the basic safety rules and standards of CPCS. A booklet of Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines is given to new joiners. Safety refresher courses are conducted annually from September to October to remind colleagues of important safety knowledge and learn from critical cases that happened during the year. In addition colleagues attend safety training courses and safety conference organized by external institutes to widen their exposure to safety concerns and mitigation procedures.

4. Promotion and Communication

A Health and Safety Campaign is held annually. We also joined the safety campaigns held by Hong Kong Airport Authority such as Airport Staff Safety Recognition Scheme. Updated safety messages are displayed on safety notice boards and are disseminated to all colleagues regularly. Safety related articles are published in our regular internal newsletter to raise the awareness of colleagues on the importance of industrial safety. Our team of safety ambassadors coming from different department would helps promoting industrial safety on the shop floor.

Safety Plan for 2010

On top of organizing the continuation of the initiatives described above, the Safety Team together with the major operational departments will arrange the following activities during 2010:

1. Ramp Safety Improvement Plan

In order to enhance the safety performance in the ramp area, the Safety Team will cooperate with Operations Department to implement ramp safety improvement plan.

2. Behaviour Based Safety Program (BBS)

As “human error” is identified as a major cause of industrial accidents, the Safety Team will cooperate with major operational departments to implement the BBS program in the workplace to ensure proper procedures be executed so as to minimize the number of industrial accidents.

3. Strengthen communication with line departments

In order to strengthen the communication with line departments, information related to industrial safety performance would be shared with major operational departments monthly for cascading down the message to staff in their monthly briefing.

4. Strengthen First Aider Team

In order to enlarge the “pool” of first-aiders, recruitment campaign will be held. In addition, new first aid courses will be co-organized with Hong Kong Red Cross to equip the new first-aiders with skills and provide them with proper certifications.
